Opioid Addiction: Introduction to Opioids
Goal:

The learner will understand the pharmacological mechanisms of opioids, including opioid dependence and its treatment with buprenorphine.

After completing this activity participants will be able to:

  • Identify the 3 types of opioid receptors (mu, kappa and delta) and their reaction to the presence of different types of opioids.

  • Differentiate between opioid agonists, partial agonists and antagonists.

  • Understand the distinction between neutral antagonists and reverse agonists.

  • Understand the relationship between buprenorphine's pharmacological make-up and its efficacy in treatment of opioid dependence.

  • Describe the causes of and relationship between opioid tolerance, dependence and withdrawal.
