Goal: To provide health profession students with the necessary knowledge and skills training to be able to confidently interview, assess, and counsel patients with alcohol use disorders.Alcohol use continues to be a widespread public and social health problem. The health care provider needs to be able to screen for drinking in patients and assess, provide brief interventions, and/or make appropriate referrals when screening results are positive. The reality is that few physicians or other health care providers are routinely providing screening or intervention with their patients (D'Amico et al., 2005).
Educational Objectives:After completing this activity participants will be able to:
Confidently conduct a basic patient interview assessing for alcohol use disorders.
Choose and implement an appropriate screening instrument.
Correctly identify the different criteria and distinguishing factors between abuse and dependence in patients.
Outline a preliminary diagnosis for patients with abuse or dependence.
Assess a patient's willingness to change and use this assessment to motivate the patient towards treatment.
Perform a brief intervention to patients who misuse alcohol.
Assess and refer those patients who are at a higher risk level to a specialist's care.
Manage patients who have relapsed, encouraging those patients to attempt treatment again.
Describe how to confidently interview patients for alcohol use.
Recommend to patients a treatment plan that coordinates patient care with other health professionals.
Facilitate treatment confidentiality in multiple contexts with multiple parties in a coordinated care effort.
